How to Choose Art Prints

Now, the fun part: picking your wall art print. It might sound obvious, but take a sec to really think about your style. You don’t want a bold vintage poster if you’re more Scandi minimalist - you know what all those girl-power pop songs say about being something you’re not. When it comes to buying art, personal style always trumps trends.

Also, think about the kind of energy you want to bring to a room - maybe you want a peaceful bedroom, or a fun and bright kitchen. It’s your life, do what you want. There’s just one rule: keep the colour scheme of your room in mind. We’re not talking about going full-on matchy-matchy, but if your furniture is all in muted earth hues, then try picking out a print with greens and browns.

Generally speaking, your print should be half the size of the piece of furniture it’s hanging above. If you’re doing a gallery wall, prints of varying sizes always look best. Speaking of gallery walls, make sure the colours of your chosen prints compliment each other, but have fun with it - we think an eclectic mixture of styles and frames looks best. Lastly, get creative: art in unexpected places - say, hanging on a door, or maybe a little too close to that bookshelf - can really add a little bit of ‘je ne sais quoi’ to your abode.

How to Hang Your Art Print

So you’ve got your perfect wall art print(s), all framed and ready to go. But - oops - the only time you’ve handled a hammer is, well, never. Don’t freak - it’s really super simple. For most prints, just ol’ nail-in-the-wall will do. If your print is really heavy, you may need some kind of anchor to hang it, or more than one nail.

To avoid a wonky frame, you’re going to need to mark out where you’re hanging your print first. You can do it the old fashioned way with a tape measurer and some painter’s tape, but since we live in the future, we prefer to use an app to do the hard bit for us. You’ll find lots of options on the app store, but our favourite one is Hang-a-Pic - it’ll tell you exactly where each nail should be placed.

Renters, we hear ya: a hole in your wall means a hole in your deposit. Luckily, you’ve got options. Our favourite way to hang a print without a nail is… by not hanging it at all. You can put framed prints of varying sizes on the floor and lean them against the wall - it’ll give your room a little bit of that cool-without-trying chicness. You can also put unhung prints on top of dressers, floating shelves… anywhere there’s an elevated surface.

If you’re really set on putting your print on the wall, there’s plenty of ways you can avoid a hole-y disaster. We have two words for you: command strips. These babies are a godsend for deposit-conscious renters. You can find them at pretty much any DIY store, and all you have to do is place a few along your frame for a wall-friendly hanging solution. We’re also fans of hanging unframed prints with decorative tape, or clipping them along a clothesline for a boho look.
