There are a few different types at play here, so let us help you break it down. Wall shelves are shelves fixed to a wall (duh) either with brackets or floating. Bookcases and shelving units are obviously free-standing so they don't need to be fixed to a wall and they can generally hold a lot more stuff than a wall shelf. But, obviously, you'll need space on your floor for them to stand!
