As you have probs already gathered, there are lots and lots of weird and wonderful shapes and styles when it comes to sunglasses. Whilst any of these sunglasses will look great as long as you style it with confidence, there are some basic guidelines to follow if you’re feeling a bit hesitant.
If you’ve got a round face (think: curves rather than defined angles as seen on Beyonce and Mila Kunis), then your ideal eyewear here should lack curved features while emphasising sharp angular lines that will help elongate your face and make it look thinner and sharper. Check out Darkside Eyewear’s uber modern square frames in baby pink, or their more-is-more Proteus Sunglasses in Black to achieve this look.
On the other end of the spectrum is the square face. Characterised by sleek, razor sharp edges along their jawline and a broad forehead (think: Rihanna and Lady Gaga), these peeps benefit from round and oval shapes that help balance their sharpness with some roundness. In particular, go for aviators and butterflies designs like Kaibosh Sunglasses’ nylon pink oval shades. Basically, just don the opposite shaped lens to your face shape and you’ll bag yourself a one way ticket to Sexyville.
However, with over 7 billion faces on the planet all sorts of face shapes crop up and it isn’t always obvious what sunnies would best suit them. The heart shape face is one that springs to mind, and for those of you who don’t know what it is, it’s when someone’s face is widest at the temple and narrowest at the chin (a bit like a heart, get it?). Celebs such as Halle Berry and Reese Witherspoon rock this shape, and shades with wide lower edges and no straight lines along the top are the go to for this facial group. Special shoutouts to cat eye style frames as the ideal shape for this face, but rimless, butterfly and aviator lens also work a treat.
Last up: the oval face shape. Oval faces have gently rounded, fairly even features, which lucky for them means pretty much every shade complements their face. When you’ve got the creme of the crop at your feet, it can be pretty daunting to choose between them all. We personally would recommend Cheapo’s striking black Niagra Sunglasses to get you beach ready, or Hindsight Vintage’s black and beige, genuine 1990s shades for a grungy (and very on trend) city hopping look. Then again, it would be rude not to when Wolfnoir’s retro, unisex, yellow sunnies complete with UV400 sun protection are that spell-binding.
Don’t get us wrong - we adore the sun, but it’s important to be in the know about the nasties harbouring within it. Whilst giving us Vitamin D, tans and perfect pool party weather, it also emits harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation that seriously affects our skin and eyes. Now UVA and UVB rays are pretty similar with regards to the damage they cause (mainly: premature skin ageing, skin cancer and permanent retinal damage), but UVB are more dangerous for your eyes as they are more intense.
Don’t be a numpty and protect against UV by slathering on the sunscreen and investing in premium lenses boosting solid eye protection. We recommend émon’s gorgeous tortoise frame complete with dark silver UV400 Carl Zeiss lenses to keep your eyes well looked after, or The Mix’s fun and playful overused wayfarer shaped matt plum shades with orange/ red flash mirror lenses (providing 100% UV protection) if you don’t want to
It is important to note that these rays are out there even when you least expect it. Even if it’s a particular cloudy day or your skiing in the cold, the glare from the sun can bounce off all kinds of unassuming surfaces and cause lots of havoc to you eyeballs. So make sure you keep a pair of sunnies in your bag wherever you are so you’re never caught out.
